KNUT

KNUT
Knut arrived in Copenhagen by bicycle, wearing an old coat and with one thing clear: he was meant to write. Everything else he lost along the way.
He slept wherever he could: in cheap lodgings, on park benches or in the back rooms of seedy bars. He ate less and wrote more. When he ran out of paper, he carried on writing on old envelopes, newspaper margins, whatever he could find.
He published very little, and what did appear went unnoticed. Too difficult to read, they said.
When they found Knut, he looked as though he were asleep, with a strange expression of pride in defeat. Those who cleared away his belongings threw the finest work of his life into the rubbish, among all those scraps of paper, unaware of its value.
He knew what he was worth. The world did not.
